Hugh Cranford All-Scholastic Team

The 2011 Hugh Cranford All-Scholastic Team is a special award recognizing the academic accomplishments and community service record of junior golfers who are past participants of Optimist International championship tournaments or District qualifiers.

The team will consist of up to five golfers who will be between the ages of 16 and 18 as of the last day of the 2011 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships (July 31, 2011). Junior golfers selected to the team will receive an automatic exemption into the championships and complimentary registration (the selected participant’s registration fee—which is inclusive of tournament entry, hotel accommodations and meals—will be waived). The exemption includes an invitation to participate in the 2011 Optimist International Junior Golf Championships without having to play in a qualifying tournament.  Junior golfers who are interested in applying should read the steps below and submit an application.

Application Steps:

(1) Download and print this2011 Optimist International All-Scholastic Team application.  The application deadline has passed.  Please check back in February 2012 for information on the 2012 team.

(2) Complete the application as indicated.

(3) Include a writing sample (250 to 500 words) on the topic indicated.

(4) Attach supporting documentation (transcript, grade reports, test results, etc).

(5) Send the application to the following address. Application must be postmarked no later than April 9, 2011:

Hugh Cranford


Hugh Cranford served as Executive Director of Optimist International from 1967 to 1986. He was instrumental in starting the Optimist Junior Golf program and in 1978 led the efforts to co-sponsor the Optimist Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, the forerunner to today’s Optimist International Junior Golf Championships. In recent years, Cranford has served as chairman and member of the committee that oversees the Optimist Junior Golf program. He is currently an emeritus member of the committee.

The Optimist Junior Golf Committee will review applications and all applicants will be notified of their status in writing by May 6, 2011. Applicants will be considered based on their academic record but must also show that they have acceptable tournament experience to be able to compete at the international level.  In addition, all applicants' community service experience will be reviewed for consideration for the "Bringing Out the Best in Kids" Community Service Award.
