How to Qualify for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships

There are five ways to qualify for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships: official District qualifying tournaments, exemptions, the US/Canada At Large application process, International designates, and the International At Large application process.

District Qualifying Tournaments
Optimist Districts in the US and Canada organize tournaments that serve as qualifying events for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.  Many Districts offer all boys and girls age divisions while some Districts will choose to only offer certain divisions based on demand and golf course availability.  Golfers who live in an Optimist District are required to play in a District qualifier in order to attempt to advance for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships unless they qualify for an exemption (see below). If a golfer cannot play in his/her District tournament due to a conflict, he/she may travel to another District to attempt to qualify.  A limited number of golfers in each age division will advance to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships through all District qualifiers.

If a golfer (in the 10-11 and 12-13 divisions only) lives in an Optimist District that does not offer a qualifier (or does not offer their age division), they may be eliglbe to submit a US/Canada At Large application.  See below for details.

Exemptions
Optimist Junior Golf offers several exemptions into the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.  Golfers who have earned an exemption are not required to play in a District tournament to attempt to qualify (but may do so if they choose).  For a list of 2010 exemptions, click here.

US/Canada At Large Application
Junior golfers (in the boys & girls 10-11 and 12-13 division only) who live in an Optimist District that does not offer an official qualifying tournament or does not offer their age division may submit an application for consideration directly to Optimist International.  A golfer who lives in an Optimist District MUST play in his/her District's qualifying tournament if his/her age division is offered and will not be permitted to submit an At Large application.  This method is NOT available for golfers in the boys & girls 14-15 and 16-18 divisions.  At Large applications will be accepted beginning February 8, 2010.  For more information, click here.

International Designates
There are several international organizations that send designated golfers to the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.  Golfers who live in these nations must contact the organization in their home nation for details.  For a list of participating nations and more information, click here.

International At Large Application
Junior golfers who live in nations that are NOT included above may submit an application for consideration directly to Optimist International.  In order to be eligible for the International At Large application, the golfer must be a permanent resident of the nation they are representing.  A permanent resident is a golfer who lives AND attends school in the nation represented.  International At Large applications will be accepted beginning February 8, 2010.  Stay tuned for more information.  For more information, click here.
