What are your primary qualifications for this office?
As evidenced by the above Optimist-related information and Optimist awards achieved, I have a long background of service and involvement at the Club, Zone, District, and International level. Throughout the times I have served in leadership capacities, we have realized increased membership, more involvement and awareness by our Clubs, and added service to the youth and to our communities.
My work career also presented numerous opportunities to travel to various field offices in the United States where I would have the opportunity to help analyze their levels of success while also providing suggestions on possible process improvements. My Optimist experience and work experience combined would lend themselves to success in the eventual role of Vice-President of the Southeast Region.
Practically my entire adulthood has also found me in various levels of service in my church (Senoia United Methodist). Such areas include 15 years as a volunteer (unpaid) Choir / Music Director. I also taught Middle School children in the church’s Sunday School program. In addition, I have served numerous times as the Chair of the church’s Administrative Council, which is the local church’s leadership / governing organization. My Optimist activities and my church responsibilities will help to keep me focused on service to others while working with dedicated volunteers.
Why should a Club vote for you?
I am honored to be selected by the Candidate Qualifications Committee as their top choice to serve as Southeast Region Vice President-Elect. I do not take their confidence in me lightly.
When I helped to charter my home Optimist Club in 1985, it was partly due to a desire to serve others and give back to the community I knew as home. I am proud of our Club’s accomplishments, the accomplishments of Optimist Clubs everywhere, and the many ways in which the organization has helped to make me a better person. I try to embrace the saying, “The life you lead is the lesson you teach” (Anonymous) and our service as Optimists gives us an opportunity to teach a positive lesson every day.
My wife, Vicki, and our daughter and son (both now grown) have always supported my Optimist endeavors, and they have all been involved in different projects/endeavors over the years. I know that I have their support as I run for the position of Vice President-Elect.
If elected to this prestigious position, I will strive to serve in such a way as to encourage Clubs throughout our Region to become stronger and more effective while also spreading Optimism to more new Clubs.
I have an extensive background in successfully dealing with Optimists and helping to encourage growth while addressing opportunities that arise. Although I am also involved in other outside interests, I am retired thereby giving me more time to focus on my service as an Optimist.
What specific things will you do to help the Clubs and Districts in your Region?
If I am approved as the Vice President-Elect, I will work with the Districts throughout the Southeast Region as well as the other Vice Presidents to encourage growth and added service. Through effective communication (e.g. conference calls, individual calls, emails, and personal visits), I will offer support and encouragement to help the District leaders and share proven ideas that will help each other.
Anything else you would like to say to Clubs.
Nick Prillaman, the nominee for President-Elect, was my mentor when I served as District Governor in 2013-2014, and I would eagerly look forward to working with him and with all of the Southeast District Clubs as we focus on growth and added service for this great organization in 2017-2018.
