What are your primary qualifications for this office?
I have vast experience on many Boards of Directors, within the Optimist organization and outside. I have been President of the Chamber of Commerce in my own community with hundreds of members, helping to create significant growth in that organization. My Optimist career has been one of consistent success, within Junior Optimist International and adult Optimists. I am particularly proud of becoming the first Distinguished Governor in 14 years in 2005-2006, as we created nine new Clubs, and recruited 800 Optimist Members that year. Building an effective team for accomplishing specific goals is one of my strengths, and working with others on their specific goals is what I look forward to as a member of the Board of Directors.
Why should a Club vote for you?
Being part of a large Club of almost 100 Members and a small Club of 15, I believe that I have a good sense of the issues facing our many diverse Optimist Clubs. One cannot take a cookie-cutter approach in helping Optimist Clubs succeed. All issues need to be analyzed with an open mind, without preconceived ideas in order to create effective solutions. My continuing work with Junior Optimist International also keeps me on the pulse of what's happening in the lives of youth. This perspective will benefit our Clubs, as I can provide insight to fellow Board Members, helping to keep our focus squarely on serving your youth and on our Clubs serving youth in their communities
As an Optimist International Board Member, what specific things will you work to achieve for the good of the organization?
I believe it is very important to create a model for growth that will pass the test of time. Now is the time to create that model, for there is more need than ever for Optimists, and with a progressive plan, we can indeed grow. Doing the same things works for many successful Clubs, and we do not want to do anything to take away from their success, yet the organization, as a whole does need to make some changes in order to grow. Creating a consistent set of procedures that does not change from year to year is important, as well as being open minded enough to consider all ideas, especially those coming from our Optimist Clubs. I also see Junior Optimist International as a part of our organization with tremendous potential to become even more important to our organization. To that end, I will work to encourage our Clubs to “Bring out the Best in OUR Kids.” Finally, as a businessperson, I know the importance of marketing, and I will work with current and future administrations.
Anything else you would like to say to Clubs.
I am proud to have been nominated by the Candidate Qualifications Committee as one of their two preferred candidates for the Board of Directors of Optimist International for the second time in four years. I know how hard they work to find qualified candidates. If chosen, I will serve the Members with my head and with my heart.
