Optimist International Junior Golf Championships End in Dramatic Fashion
July 28, 2008
With sudden-death playoffs in two divisions and remarkably low scores in the final round, the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships came to a close today at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

In the girls 14-15 age division, a three-way tie for first place forced a sudden-death playoff on PGA National’s Haig course. One hole was all it took for Liliana Cammisa of Cordoba, Argentina (72-76-72—220), to claim the championship title. A scorecard playoff determined second and third place, with Tuangtong Sangrattanatongkam of Chachoengsao, Thailand, taking second (72-75-73—220), and Moriya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand, coming in third (69-77-74—220).

The other sudden-death playoff came in the boys 12-13 division on the Palmer course. Justin Pagila of Dublin, California, jumped into first place with a 64 for the final round and 72-72-64—208 overall. He ended the day tied with Guillermo Pereira of Santiago, Chile (69-70-69—208), at eight under par. The boys battled it out on a four-hole playoff before Pereira was declared the champion in front of a large crowd of spectators. Pereira is not unfamiliar with pressure at the Optimist Championships. At the 2006 tournament, he was in a two-player sudden-death playoff in the boys 10-11 division. That playoff also lasted four holes and he ended the tournament in second place. Coming in third place in the boys 12-13 division was Beau Hossler of Rancho Santa Margarita, California, with 69-67-73—209. More

Optimist International Junior Golf Championships Head Into Final Round
July 27, 2008
With just one round to go at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships, several age divisions have well-established leaders while others have a championship up for grabs.

The 12-13 age divisions had the advantage of finishing relatively early while the 10-11 and 14-15 age divisions had extensive rain delays for a large percentage of the fields.

In the boys 12-13 division, it was Beau Hossler of Rancho Santa Margarita, California, who declared himself the leader as he shot a five-under 67 in round two to take possession of first place. With a two-day 69-67--136, Hossler enters the final round on Monday eight under par and three strokes ahead of the competition. At five under and in second place is Guillermo Pereira of Santiago, Chile, with a score of 69-70--139. Michael Decker of Pebble Beach, California, was one over for the day and slips from first to third place with a score of 68-73--141.

In the girls 12-13 division, Ariya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand, worked her way into first place as she shot a one-under 71 for the day. Her two-day total is 69-71--140 and she enters the final round one stroke ahead of the competition. Jutanugarn returns to the tournament this year after capturing the girls 10-11 championship in 2007. More

Impressive Scores Rule the Day at Optimist International Junior Golf Championships
July 26, 2008
Par didn’t cut it in most divisions at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships on Saturday as more than a few golfers had remarkable rounds during the first day of play at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

In the boys 14-15 division, Poom Saksanil of Bangkok, Thailand, made himself known as he shot a 68 and took an early lead in the 101-player field. In second place was Haydn Porteous of Johannesburg, South Africa, with a two-under 70. Porteous is familiar with success at the Optimist Championships, finishing in a tie for third in the boys 12-13 division of the 2007 tournament. In third place and just one stroke behind Porteous with a 71 was Byoung Jun Chung of Rosario, Argentina. The boys 14-15 division is competing on the well-known Champion course, which is home to the pros during the PGA TOUR’s Honda Classic each March. More

Optimist Competitors Finish Big in Other Noted Junior Golf Tournaments
July 22, 2008
Quite a few golfers competing in this week’s Optimist International Junior Golf Championships are hot off of high finishes at other noted tournaments.

Golfers in the younger age divisions will find some good competition this week with a number of golfers finding success at last week’s Callaway Golf Junior World Golf Championships in California.

Competitors in this week’s boys 10-11 division filled the top spots at last week’s tournament in California. Sahith Theegala of Chino Hills, California, took first place, Ryan Rhee of Fullerton, California, took second place and Piyachad Yusabi of Bangkok, Thailand, tied for third in the boys 10 and under division.

In the girls 10 and under division, Allisen Corpuz of Kapolei, Hawaii, finished in second place and Eloise Healey of Liverpool, England, tied for seventh. Both girls are competing in this week’s 10-11 division. More
